Ontario premier Doug Ford has pushed the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) to reinstate its use of paper bags for customers.
Ford issued a letter to the LCBO’s president and CEO Dr. George Soleas on Sunday, urging the Crown corporation to reverse their decision to remove free paper bags from their retail stores.
That new policy went into effect in September 2023 in an eco-conscious effort to divert 2,655 tonnes of waste from landfills. Customers have been able to use their own reusable bags or purchase them on site.

However, Ford expresses that the policy puts “additional and unnecessary burdens” on Ontarians.
“At a time when many Ontario families are already struggling to make ends meet, every additional expense counts,” wrote Ford in his letter.
“That includes charging customers for reusable bags instead of the free paper bags that the LCBO previously offered. This change has left people stuck openly carrying alcohol in public when leaving a [sic] LCBO store.”
Ford goes on to label the environmental merits of the LCBO’s policy “questionable at best” while pointing to the recyclability of paper bags.
Since receiving the letter, the LCBO has confirmed that they are taking steps to reinstate single-use paper bags in their stores, with more detail shared in the coming weeks.
