E-scooters are now allowed to be ridden in Hamilton

Hamilton city councillors approved the use of personal e-scooters on city streets last week

Although commercial e-scooters may be a little way off, Hamilton’s public works committee unanimously approved the use of personal e-scooters that can travel up to 24 km/h on municipal roads.

City regulations will ban the use of the scooters on sidewalks and trails in parks due to concerns with them getting a little too close to pedestrians.

Some wards are concerned about enforcing these restrictions in their areas that historically have similar problems already.

A decision about allowing commercial e-scooters and bike share programs will be made early next year.

The provincial government announced a five-year pilot project to allow e-scooters on roads if municipalities agree.

It is thought that e-scooters are beneficial to reducing car use and making individuals more reliant on public transit. They also reduce air pollution.
