First batches of COVID-19 vaccine doses have arrived in Canada

It’s happening! Planes carrying the first batch of COVID-19 vaccine doses officially arrived in Canada on Sunday evening in preparation for the start of the largest inoculation program in this country’s history.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweeted the news at 8 pm on Sunday that the first batch of doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine – which sports a ground breaking 95 per cent efficacy – landed safely in Quebec, with more doses to follow on Monday.

Similarly, several thousand doses of the vaccine landed here in Ontario at our very own Hamilton International Airport, where Ontario Premier Doug Ford greeted the plane’s arrival.

Initial doses of the vaccine will be doled out to priority groups including hospital frontline workers and staff in long-term care facilities, with further batches coming in the new year that will gradually be administered to the remainder of the Canadian population.

While it’s extremely hopeful news, Prime Minister Trudeau stresses that this is not the time to let our guards down regarding health & safety protocols.

“This is good news. But our fight against COVID-19 is not over,” tweeted Trudeau. “Now more than ever, let’s keep up our vigilance.”

Canadians can continue doing their part by wearing a mask at all times in public spaces, maintaining at least 2 metres of distance from others, staying home whenever possible, only closely socializing with those in their immediate households, and frequently washing their hands.
