In sad news for lovers of Hamilton’s arts & culture scene, one of the city’s enduring independent art galleries has announced that it is permanently closing its doors.
The gallery, called b contemporary, was known for years as a fixture of the James North strip among other independent art galleries and studios such as Hamilton Artists Inc, You Me Gallery, and Centre3.
However, in 2019, b contemporary was forced to close its space on the strip and move to more affordable digs at 486 Barton Street East as the James Street North continues to gentrify and building rents skyrocket; a grim and ironic turn of events, given that the independent arts scene of James North is part of what made the street such an attractive locale in the first place.
I'm closing b contemporary. It's been a tough year & my priorities have changed. The gallery life has been challenging & rewarding, but my energy is needed elsewhere now. Thanks to everyone.

Though the gallery stuck it out in its new Barton Street location for a while, b contemporary’s owner David Brace recently announced through social media that his time running the gallery has come to a close.
“It’s been a tough year & my priorities have changed,” said Brace. “The gallery life has been challenging and rewarding, but my energy is needed elsewhere now.”
Though it’s sad to see another icon in Hamilton’s arts identity come to an end, b contemporary will certainly be fondly remembered through years of curated gallery showings, Art Crawl open houses, and performance art events.
