Each year, the City of Hamilton honours local artists in numerous disciplines for their exceptional work in the community; and the nominees for this year’s Hamilton Arts Awards have just been announced.
Though past years of the Hamilton Arts Awards have been broken up into specific categories such as Theatre, Fine Craft, Music, Performance, Writing, and many others, this year’s awards have taken a different approach.
Instead, local arts practitioners in a wide array of disciplines have been nominated in one of two general categories: The Creator Award, and the Arts Champion Award.
We are pleased to announce the 2021 City of Hamilton Arts Awards Short List!

Furthermore, the Hamilton Arts Awards also recognize a local emerging creator who is young in craft through the Shirley Elford Emerging Artist Commission Prize, as well as honour an established artist of note with the Lifetime Achievement Award.
“The Arts Awards showcase the vital role that the arts and artists play in bringing us joy, wonder, and connection,” said Hamilton’s Mayor Fred Eisenberger in a statement.
“Art brings community together in a way words cannot. The work artists do in our city is an inspiration to the entire community and it is an honour to recognize their contributions through this innovative format. Congratulations and thank-you to everyone who has been involved within the arts over the past year.”
This year’s range of 28 shortlisted nominees for the Creator Award include musicians like Azuline Duo, Leon ‘Eklipz’ Robinson, and Bill Majoros; visual artists such as David Brace, Michael Allgower, and Olivia Brouwer; theatre practitioners like Stephanie Hope Lawlor, Karen Ancheta, and Aaron Joel Craig; and writers like Steacy Easton and Jennifer Gilles.
Shortlisted nominees for the Arts Champion Award – a prize that recognizes a Hamiltonian who exhibits exceptional support of local arts – include Judy Marsales, Nancy McKibbin Gray, Erica Commisso, Teba Faisal, Bethany Osborne, Bradlee Henry, and Brenda Ferguson.
Finally, for the Lifetime Achievement Award, finalists include Juno Award-winning musician Tom Wilson, and Judith Sandiford & Ronald Weihs formerly of the now-shuttered Artword Artbar on James North.
The 2021 Hamilton Arts Awards will take place in a unique virtual format, with winners announced and profiled in a series of podcast episodes from June 3rd to June 12th, 2021.
