Riders on Hamilton’s public transit system are now able to tap their credit card on a PRESTO card-reading device to pay their fare.
In a move by the Ontario government that officially went into effect on January 23rd, patrons of the Hamilton Street Railway (HSR) now have the option to tap a valid credit card – including credit cards on smart phones or smart watches – to automatically pay a full adult fare.

“This latest milestone in the continuous advancement of the PRESTO system will provide users greater ease and convenience when travelling for work, school, leisure, and more,” said Stan Cho, Ontario’s Associate Minister of Transportation.
“The expansion of credit card payment on PRESTO devices in Durham Region, York Region, Burlington, and Hamilton is just another way our government is simplifying the transit experience for Ontarians.”
The ability to tap credit cards to pay fare on PRESTO devices was originally launched in 2021 for the Union Pearson (UP) Express, and was further expanded in 2022 to the full GO Transit network as well as the transit systems in Brampton, Mississauga, and Oakville.
