Hamilton considers environmentally friendly burials

Death and funeral plans are touchy subjects. Talking about the inevitable can be extremely uncomfortable, but it’s important to know your loved one’s wishes when it comes to their final resting place. While six-feet burials and cremation are the most popular resting methods, Hamilton’s cemetery staff members are considering implementing a greener option.

Earlier this year, the city conducted a survey asking residents if they would be interested in a natural burial practice.

Results showed that 58 per cent of all participants said they might be interested.

If Hamilton moves forward with offering greener burials, the first green burial site will be located at Mount Hamilton Cemetery. The space will cost approximately $100,000.

The 8,400-square-metre green space could accommodate up to 3,500 lots.

If one plans to have a green burial, there is no embalming of the body. One’s body is wrapped in a cotton shroud or placed in a box made of biodegradable material. The body is buried at about three feet under instead of six feet.

There will be a communal memorialization instead of individual headstones.

Indigenous peoples and other cultures have used natural burial practices for centuries. No health issues have been found when using this eco-friendly way of burial.
