Hamilton finds sponsor to maintain rainbow crosswalks

This past summer, Hamilton made the important decision to recognize LGBTQ+ Pride all year long. To showcase this celebration of Pride, the city’s Public Works committee installed rainbow crosswalks at two different downtown locations.

As the crosswalks are in high traffic areas, they have already sustained a significant amount of aesthetic damage. To combat this damage and to keep the rainbow’s colours bright and visible, Hamilton has partnered with TD Canada Trust to maintain the crosswalks.

For the next five years, TD Canada Trust will cover the cost of maintaining the crosswalks at both Main Street West in front of City Hall and Summers Lane by the convention centre. TD Canada Trust has agreed to a sponsorship of $10,000, paying for all touch-ups and any other repairs required.

While both crosswalks are in great condition structurally, the rainbow crosswalk desperately needs to be repainted.

Currently the crosswalk is coated in black tire marks – something that has raised concerns for some Hamiltonians. It’s unclear whether or not these markings were deliberate or accidental; once the crosswalk is repainted, this question should be answered.

Hamilton is still looking for a sponsor to maintain the third coloured crosswalk at McMaster University. As this particular crosswalk has already fallen victim to vandalism, finding a sponsor is of upmost importance.

Who do you think should sponsor the crosswalk at McMaster? Where else does Hamilton need rainbow crosswalks? Let us know in the comments.
