Hamilton Harbour home to toxic algae

Before taking a dip outside this long weekend, make sure it’s safe to do so.

Many parts of Hamilton’s harbour are contaminated with toxic blue-green algae.

Hamilton’s Public Health officials have confirmed that Bayfront Park, Pier 4 Park beach, Harbour West Marina and the various marinas on Macassa Bay have all been infected.

Contact with blue-green algae can pose many health risks.

If your skin comes in contact with the contaminated water, it may become irritated or itchy. Be sure to wash the affected areas immediately with clean water.

If contaminated water is ingested, it may cause headaches, fever, nausea, vomiting and rashes. If you or somebody you know has swallowed contaminated water and is beginning to suffer from such symptoms, please visit your doctor or a walk-in clinic immediately.
