Hamilton ice cream shop Sprinkles on Top is closing its doors

In a not-so-sweet announcement on social media, Hamilton’s popular ice cream parlour, tea room, and bakery Sprinkles on Top has said that it will be permanently closing its doors.

Located on King Street East in the heart of Stoney Creek, Sprinkles on Top is a beloved local spot for cold ice cream, hot tea, and a wide assortment of baked goods from cupcakes to cookies to macarons and more.

However, owner Michelle Sutherland posted to Sprinkles on Top’s Facebook page on August 17th to notify their loyal customer base that the shop is set to close officially on September 7th, due to both the business struggles of the COVID-19 era as well as some personal family health issues.

“With a very heavy heart I am writing this post. As some of you have probably noticed I haven’t had much of a presence in the store since the end of May. My husband which some of you will know has had a terminal diagnosis and I am caring for him,” said Sutherland, adding her hopes that whoever ends up purchasing the business will keep it going strong.

“My heart breaks to have to do this but we will have to close the business as of Labour Day (Sept. 7th). I would love nothing more for someone that would love an ice cream parlour and tea room to buy the business and carry on with it.”

The response to the heartbreaking announcement has been immense, with hundreds of patrons commenting with their well-wishes, farewell messages, and memories.

While the closure is certainly a sad one, there’s still time to pay one last visit to Sprinkles on Top before their official closure as of September 7th. Stop by and show ‘em some love, Hamilton!
