With the sizeable project sitting $15 million over budget, the City of Hamilton is forced to cut millions of redevelopment dollars from its plans to revitalize and redevelop Hamilton’s waterfront.
A vote on Tuesday by Hamilton’s West Harbour development subcommittee initiated cuts of a $2,490,000 plan for Bayview Park’s redevelopment, $3 million from work on Macassa Bay, and $1.1 million from revitalizing the Barton-Tiffany area.
As per a vote from a city councillor subcommittee, a portion of the redevelopment work has been postponed until 2022. “There’s $15 million we need to find,” said ward councillor Chad Collins in a report issued by the CBC.
While the shortcomings and setbacks may seem like a negative for Hamilton’s overall burgeoning development, some local leaders remain optimistic. With a project of this size and a $156 million budget, changes are pretty much inevitable, according to Ward 2 city councillor Jason Farr.
The massive plans include turning Piers 7 and 8 into nine blocks of condominiums and townhouses as well as commercial space and new boardwalk. The finished project is predicted to become an attractive, high-profile public space in the city.
