Potential starting line-up for Forge FC in the first leg of the CPL Finals

The inaugural season of the Canadian Premier League ended last weekend with Forge FC finishing second in the Fall season. After a strong season, Forge are looking to add the first trophy to their cabinet as they compete against Calgary’s Cavalry FC in the CPL 2019 Finals.

Cavalry took the fall title by only one point over Forge. That single point is the fine line that has separated the two sides over the last few months. Forge and Cavalry ended the season having played each other on seven occasions with an identical record of three wins, one draw and three losses.

With the CPL Finals set to kick off on Saturday, we will finally be able to see which team might edge out the other. But first, let’s look into Forge’s possible starting line-up for the first leg on October 26th at Tim Hortons Field.

Goalkeeper

Forge’s reliable goalkeeper Triston Henry will likely get the start as we saw his stock rise after a few key saves in the Fall Season. The Scarborough native keeps the play moving from the back with an average of 25 passes per game.

Defenders

With a collection of suspensions to the back line for leg one of the finals, David Edgar seems to be one of the only regular starters available for Saturday. Bertrand Owundi and Dom Samuel have both been suspended as head coach Bobby Smyrniotis will have to look to his squad for the match on Saturday. Defenders Daniel Krutzen, Monti Mohsen and Jonathan Grant all seem like decent options as Forge search for a clean sheet.

Midfielders

Forge’s quick movement of the ball through midfield is often led by captain Kyle Bekker. With some of the best all-round possession and passing midfielders in the CPL, it seems likely Forge might stick to the midfield three of Bekker, Tristan Borges and Guiliano Frano that helped them win against Cavalry last week.

Forwards

In form striker Anthony Novak’s strong and imposing presence might be enough to offset the Cavalry defence. Coach Smyrniotis has been experimenting a lot with the attacking positions throughout the season, but Marcel Zajac and Christopher Nanco seem like decent options out wide for an attacking threat during the home fixture of the two-legged final.

The last time Cavalry and Forge met, the Hamilton side lined up in a 4-3-3 formation. And it seems like that sort of holding possession in midfield and high intensity attacking might be enough to catch Cavalry out in the transition up field.

The consistency between Forge FC and Cavarly FC will hopefully make for an interesting final of the inaugural CPL season. The first game takes place Saturday October 26th at Tim Hortons Field in Hamilton, with the second leg being played a week later in Calgary.
