Hamilton is giving away 3,000 free trees to locals

The City of Hamilton is giving away thousands of trees to locals for free.

It’s part of the city’s commitment to achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 in the fight against climate change.

As part of the program, residents with private property are able to register online to claim one of 3,000 available trees in a range of native species like Sassafras, Ironwood, Eastern Redbud, Downy Serviceberry, and Eastern Flowering Dogwood.

The City is setting a goal to giveaway 3000 trees this spring through the Private Tree Giveaway, an initiative that will help offset emissions, enhance biodiversity and work as a community to prepare for the future impacts of climate change.

The trees – measuring in at one metre tall – will then be made available for contactless pickup on select dates June so those who are eligible to receive a tree can swing by to grab it during their assigned pick-up timeslot.

From there, residents who claim the city trees will be responsible for planting, watering, and maintaining it on their property.

“Trees in our city are vital tools for environmental and economic functions, including air and water filtration, carbon storage, temperature moderation, fostering biodiversity plus much more,” said Mayor Fred Eisenberger in a release.

“As Hamilton continues to grow, finding ways to invite residents of all ages to participate in the planting and caring process for trees helps us reconnect with neighbours, build a sense of community, and protect the environment for future generations.”

Through this and other initiatives, the city expects to plant somewhere between 10,000 and 12,000 trees locally in 2022.
