Local welder Matt Campbell will be the lone Canadian competing in the World Darts Championship this weekend.
Competitive darts has become quite the spectacle over the last few years with fans in fancy dress creating an electric atmosphere for the premier darts competition at Alexandra Palace in London.

The 30-year-old Hamiltonian will be wearing Canada’s colors as he competes against players from all over the world in the £2.5 million ($4.35 million) tournament. The World Darts Championship runs from December 13th to January 1st with the winner taking home £500,000 ($869,360) and the runner-up walking away with £200,000 ($347,745).
Campbell qualified after finishing as the top ranking Canadian on the 2019 Championship Darts Corporation circuit. He will play his first match on Saturday against England’s Mark McGeeney.
Unfortunately, the betting odds are not in Campbell’s favour listed at 2,500/1, which are the worst odds shared with four other players. But, even if Campbell bows out in the first round he will still earn one of his best pay-days with first round losers earning £7,500 ($13,040).
Campbell’s first game is this Saturday, December 14th.

Adding to the spectacle, each player has an entrance song with Campbell using “Handclap” by LA band Fitz and The Tantrums. He is sponsored by L-Style Global, Smurf Darts, and One80 Darts.
Fellow Canadian John Part won the championship back in 2003 and 2008. He was also a runner-up in 2001. Part is now a Sky Sports broadcaster.
