Hamilton marks one full year of COVID-19 in the city

It’s not the sort of milestone that commands celebration, but the City of Hamilton is marking the one-year anniversary of the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact on the city.

Today, March 11th, marks exactly one year since the very first known case of COVID-19 was discovered in Hamilton; a number which has grown to a total of nearly 11,000 confirmed cases since the virus first touched the city.

Countless lives in Hamilton have since been seriously impacted by COVID-19, with a total of 289 fatalities recorded to date and numerous others who experienced severe disease, hospitalization, or long-term impacts to their health.

To honour those who have lost their lives due to COVID-19, the city is flying all flags at municipal facilities at half-mast today and for the next week.

Additionally, the city is launching a video series called This is COVID-19, featuring 17 Hamiltonians sharing stories of their experiences with the coronavirus. One video will be shared per week for the next several weeks.

Numerous notable city officials have also publicly shared words in light of COVID-19’s one-year anniversary in Hamilton.

“In the year since the first COVID-19 positive case in our City, Hamiltonians have supported one another and shown the true meaning of community,” remarks Mayor Fred Eisenberger.

“There have been countless stories of compassion, selflessness and innovation and even with the pandemic bringing many difficult challenges, the kindness of individuals, businesses and groups I witnessed throughout this year makes me proud to have been your Mayor during this unprecedented time.

“Today, we remember and honour the lives we lost due to this virus and who were seriously affected. Our hearts go out to the family, friends and loved ones who lost a family member or friend. Our fight continues, and we will overcome this virus. Until then, please continue to follow all public health and safety measures. Hamilton is resilient and will come out of this stronger than ever.”

This evening, Cable 14 is set to air a special COVID-19 Retrospective, looking back at the significant ways the pandemic has impacted the city since the virus first arrived here.
