Hamilton may build a winter wonderland on the mountain

Back in June, it was announced that Hamilton is looking to build a winter wonderland park. The proposed space will be built beside the new William Connell Park, complete with professionally designed tobogganing hills.

Designing the winter wonderland will be a massive undertaking, but Hamilton’s public works committee has approved spending $100,000 on the project’s design.

West Mountain Councillor Terry Whitehead is spearheading the project, hoping that a winter destination will motivate families to get their children outside and away from video games.

While a professional design has yet to be created, Whitehead has plenty of solid ideas to contribute. Whitehead envisions a small snow hill for youths and a larger hill for tobogganing. He would also like to see a lap rink, skating loop, changing areas and additional parking.

If a winter wonderland park is built, Hamilton will finally have a winter destination for families across the GTHA. While Hamilton offers plenty of indoor activities, the city lacks outdoor recreation spaces for the winter months.

Creating a winter park will not be a cheap venture. After planning and construction, the city will have to spend approximately $7 million. According to Whitehead, the city could tap into provincial and federal grants, as well as foundations, to offset the cost.
