Hamilton Mountain to welcome a new mosque to the area

The former the Community of Christ Church building on Upper Sherman is being converted to a mosque to help accommodate the growing community.

Sohail Kahn, president of the Hamilton Mountain Jama’at, said that with around 900 members and around 400 members on the Mountain alone, they need a second place of worship in addition to the Baitun Nur Mosque on King St. East.

The Hamilton Mountain Jama’at bought the building for over $1 million back in August and took possession of the property on January 15th.

Since they have taken over the property, volunteers have been working to fix up the building, including removing wooden pews and installing new carpet.

Kahn said that some exterior bricks will need to be repaired as well as a new roof. The mosque hopes to start holding services by the summer.

The new mosque on Upper Sherman isn’t affiliated with the Hamilton Mountain Mosque on Stone Church Road East that is part of the Muslim Association of Hamilton. They are followers of the teachings of Indian Muslim leader Mizra Ghulam Ahmad. The new mosque will follow the Koran.

The congregation of the Community of Christ Church of Hamilton had seen declining numbers over the last few years and had no other option but to sell the building according to Susan Hare, the lay pastor of the church.

Their last service at the church was on January 5th, but the congregation will continue to meet in smaller venues.

Hare said that the church were really happy to see the church building play a local role in another faith community.
