Hamilton now has over 1,000 active COVID-19 cases for the first time ever

It’s not the kind of record we’re happy to break, but Hamilton just hit over 1,000 currently active COVID-19 cases for the first time since the pandemic first touched the city.
Public health reported 132 new confirmed COVID-19 cases on Wednesday afternoon, bringing the city’s total of current active cases to 1,059, which marks Hamilton’s first time hitting quadruple digits for active case numbers at one time.
To date, Hamilton has seen 5,158 confirmed local cases of COVID-19 in total, resulting from spread in the community, in hospitals, in long-term care facilities, in schools, and in businesses.
Today’s COVID-19 report also includes 6 new deaths related to the novel coronavirus, with a total of 147 Hamilton residents to date dying while infected with COVID-19. There are also currently 32 active outbreaks in the city, which have collectively resulted in 754 cases and 81 deaths.

These concerning trends in case numbers are what pushed Hamilton into COVID-19 lockdown as of this past Monday, where it will be joined by the rest of the province on December 26th in an effort by the Ontario government to slow the spread of new cases and avoid overwhelming healthcare systems province-wide.
However, the decision to begin the provincial lockdown days after it was announced rather than immediately has drawn criticism from many Ontario residents, who see the delayed action as a move that will result in further spikes in COVID-19 cases; particularly as the holidays approach and many Ontarians may end up gathering with loved ones in spite of public health urgings.
Hamilton residents are strongly urged to keep observing health & safety guidelines including only gathering with those in your immediate household, staying home except for essential reasons such as grocery shopping, wearing a mask and social distancing when in public, and frequently washing your hands.
