Health Canada has approved Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine for use

With the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine already approved and being rolled out to priority Canadians, Health Canada has just officially approved Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine for use as well, increasing Canada’s access to a reliable and effective vaccination against the novel coronavirus.

As a result of the approval on Wednesday morning, up to 168,000 doses of Moderna’s vaccine – enough to vaccine roughly 84,000 more Canadians – are expected to arrive in the country before the end of 2020, with another 2 million anticipated before the end of March 2021.

Health Canada has deemed Moderna’s vaccine safe and effective, and the initial doses Canada is set to receive will be administered to priority groups such as frontline health care workers and those living or working in long-term care facilities.

In total, Moderna is expected to provide Canada with as many as 40 million doses of the vaccine within 2021; enough to vaccinate roughly two thirds of Canada’s adult population.

Moderna’s vaccine – which has shown to be an astonishing 94.1 per cent effective –  is similar to the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine in that it utilizes mRNA technology that allows cells in the body to produce proteins that aid the body’s immune response in fighting off the novel coronavirus.

Doses of both vaccines will continue rolling out to Canadians in 2021, becoming more widely available to broader populations in the coming months.
