Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra announces exciting new 2020-21 season

Local music fans, prepare your ears: the renowned Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra (HPO) is making its return to bring you their inspiring, soul-stirring orchestral music in an innovative 2020-2021 season, reimagined for the COVID-19 era.

From Beethoven to Vivaldi, from centuries-old classics to world premiere performances, the rich and varied season lineup promises to feature the virtuosic excellence the HPO is known for in a special, live-streamed online performance format so audiences can experience the singular joy of orchestral music safely and remotely through their screens.

The first half of the 2020-21 season, led by Music Director Gemma New, kicks off on September 26th with what the HPO has dubbed The Hamilton Series: a collection of monthly concerts – from Mozart to Russian compositions to traditional holiday music – that will be broadcast online in partnership with Banko Media and feature performances and interviews by smaller groups of HPO musicians within recognizable venues and spaces in the Hamilton area.

Then, as The Hamilton Series wraps up in the new year, the HPO’s Concert Hall Series, which begins February 20th, 2021, will bring the orchestra’s core musicians back together for full performances in a safe, socially-distanced manner on the iconic FirstOntario Concert Hall stage, also to be presented online. Expect stirring concert events featuring the music of Mozart, Vivaldi, Beethoven, and more.

Like your music a little more local? The HPO’s popular Intimate & Immersive Series is back again in June 2021; and this year’s series, curated by Gemma New, puts particular emphasis on showcasing exciting works by living Canadian composers, including the HPO’s composer-in-residence Abigail Richardson-Schulte and 2019-20 HPO Composer Fellow Luis Ramirez.

In a unique adjustment given the realities of the pandemic and its temporary impact on large gatherings, the HPO’s entire 2020-21 season will be presented via online broadcasts that subscribers and ticket holders can experience through their smart TV, phone, computer, or tablet.

Subscribers can purchase a full package of all 17 presentations, or a ‘Flex Five’ package that gives subscribers the choice of any five concert events. Single tickets will also be available for the more casual concert-goers.

While the Concert Hall Series performances are planned to be presented via online broadcast, there’s also the possibility that they will be open for the public to attend in-person if public health regulations allow. If that does happen, subscribers who have booked online broadcast packages will be given first access to tickets for any of these potential in-person events.
