The one-day walk out is the latest job action to be taken by the Ontario Secondary School Teacher Federation (OSSTF) while negotiating with the Ontario government.
“We strongly urge provincial parties to reach a fair deal that honours education workers, supports learning in the classroom, and ensures entire school teams are available for our students,” said HWDSB chair Alex Johnstone in a statement on the board website.
The strike is the fourth walkout at select school boards since December when the schools performed a similar job action to show support with the union’s ongoing dispute with the Ford government.
Teachers are still disputing with the government over increasing class sizes from 22 to 25 students, requiring students to obtain two online credits to graduate, and an imposed legislated one per cent pay increase.
With secondary schools closed that means all extracurricular activities, public meetings and secondary programs will be cancelled on Wednesday, January 15th.
Although elementary schools have ramped up their job action by cancelling field trips and extracurricular activities as part of the work-to-rule campaign, all elementary schools will remain open on Wednesday.
Important Notice for Elementary School Families:
– Elem schools are open Wed., Jan. 15
– Field trips cancelled Jan.13-17. All other planned field trips on hold until further notice

The one-day strikes are coming in the haze of news about secret documents obtained by the Toronto Star. Documents contain information about the Ford government’s plan to keep online learning optional until 2024, with intent to slash school board funding while creating courses to sell to other jurisdictions at a profit.
Conflict between educators and the provincial government continues to steal the headlines into the new year. For all the information regarding job action at schools in Hamilton check the HWDSB website.
