As the Victoria Day long weekend approaches, Hamilton residents can count on seeing a number of fireworks displays around the city; many of them taking place on residential properties.
In anticipation of these homebound celebrations, the city and the Hamilton Fire Department have released a fresh set of rules, guidelines, and safety tips for locals who are planning to fire off a couple of Roman Candles on their driveways this year.
The @HamiltonFireDep is reminding residents that the discharge of fireworks on private property is only permitted between dusk and 11pm on Victoria Day (or the following day in the case of inclement weather). Firstly, fireworks displays on private properties are only permitted between dusk and 11 pm over Victoria Day weekend; a rule that will also apply to any Canada Day celebrations in July.
Additionally, setting off fireworks on any city property, including in roadways or in public parks, is not permitted and may be subject to a fine.
The city also reminds residents that fireworks should only be handled and set off by individuals over the age of 18, and any displays should be fired off in a clear-open space away from any buildings or combustible materials, including tree branches or overhead wires.
Locals who use fireworks should also ensure there’s a bucket of water or water hose close by, and that fireworks and sparklers should be disposed of by soaking them in water immediately after burnout.
Those looking for further information on how to safely and responsibly use fireworks this coming weekend can find more on the city website.
