Hamilton won’t see the return of express GO Train service for a while

Commuters shouldn’t expect to catch an express train from Hamilton to Toronto anytime soon.

According to a blog post by transit agency Metrolinx, the convenient express service on the GO Train – which offered riders a quicker trip from Hamilton to Toronto but was suspended due to the pandemic – isn’t quite ready to make its return.

That’s because ridership on GO Transit – though at higher levels than in recent pandemic years – is still sitting at just 47 per cent of its pre-pandemic levels, meaning an express train service on the Lakeshore West Line doesn’t currently reflect a worthwhile use of GO’s resources.

“Metrolinx will continue to monitor ridership closely and will ramp up service in phases, including the eventual reintroduction of express trips,” said the transit agency in a statement.

How long that ridership growth will take remains to be seen; after all, the pandemic hasn’t ended yet and a new revolution of working from home means that the pool of those who commute to Toronto for work is getting smaller.

That said, riders have reliable train service out of West Harbour GO Station, with trains departing for Toronto once per hour every day of the week.
