Hamilton’s My Thai Restaurant rebrands to Bambu today

One of Hamilton’s best spots for authentic Thai cuisine is getting a major facelift.

Starting today, My Thai Restaurant in downtown Hamilton – a decades-old fixture of Hamilton’s food scene – will be separating itself from the other My Thai locations in the region by totally rebranding and changing its name to Bambu.

If you’re a Hamiltonian who loves a good green curry or pad see ew, you’ve probably been to My Thai Restaurant at least once. A cozy, informal restaurant space by the corner of John Street and King William, My Thai has become a name synonymous with quality Thai dishes.

According to the restaurant’s owner, Heidy Nguyen, the decision to totally rebrand came mainly out of necessity.

“We couldn’t open as My Thai anymore because the trademark agreement expired and the licensee did not want to renew,” explains Nguyen. “It’s bittersweet, because My Thai has been around for almost 20 years and we are also the original location. We have so many regulars in the downtown area.”

Rather than throw in the towel, Nguyen and her team set to work on reimagining their culinary concepts and redesigning the restaurant interior. While the physical restaurant is closed until further notice amid COVID-19, Bambu is nonetheless launching itself into the city’s food scene by offering contactless delivery and curbside pickup until the dining room can finally open its doors to guests again.

What can locals expect out of the new menu at Bambu? Well, according to Nguyen, not too much is going to change right away.

“It’s mostly going to be the same menu as My Thai until COVID restrictions are over,” she says. “I wanted to introduce more dishes but, with the current supply chain, we have to stick to what’s available. New dishes will be introduced as weekly specials as we go on.”

Bambu is also taking advantage of their soft launch happening just before Mother’s Day weekend to offer a special package: for $50, locals can get enough food to feed 4 people with one appetizer, three main dishes, and rice.

The package is available to be pre-ordered for Friday, Saturday, or Sunday and, best of all, Bambu will be donating a free meal to local frontline workers for each package sold!

Bambu is officially open starting today, Thursday May 7th, for delivery, pickup, and catering. During the month of May, the restaurant is also offering reduced delivery rates. Check out their menu and more on the new Bambu website.
