One of Hamilton’s most iconic play structures is getting a facelift and will be closed until late 2024.
The tugboat play structure at Pier 4 Park officially closed off from public access following a public consultation where locals could offer input on the intended refurbishing and reconstruction of the play structure and surrounding amenities.
The Pier 4 Park tugboat play structure and the “junior” (18-months to 5-year old’s) playground will be closed beginning this week until construction of the new playground is complete in 2024.

From now until the target of November 2024 – more than a year from now – the Pier 4 tugboat play structure and the “junior” (18 months to 5 years old) playground will be closed until construction and renovation is complete.
The much-needed work will involve the tugboat, now at the end of its lifecycle, being repaired and restored. Other elements of the park, including surrounding playground equipment and the splash pad, will be completely replaced.
Additionally, new designs include a lookout patio area, bicycle parking, an ornamental garden, and an accessible entry for the tugboat.
The new Pier 4 Park playground design is set to be presented to the public this November.
