Hamilton’s Staircase Theatre is reopening under new management

Hamilton’s arts lovers are thrilled by the news that The Staircase Theatre – one of the city’s few venues and incubators for independent arts, from music to theatre to comedy and beyond – is being given yet another chance at life under new management.

It’s been a tumultuous two years for this Dundurn Street North venue, which has been a cherished fixture of the Hamilton community for decades as a hub for live performance and more, known for its gorgeous front café space and intimate black-box theatre.

The arts community was rocked when the venue announced its initial closure in the middle of 2020, but the venue was rescued mere months later by a trio of new management who wanted to maintain The Staircase as an indie arts hub while turning the front café space into a fully vegan pub.

However, as the pandemic’s impacts continued to hurt the hospitality and entertainment industries, The Staircase saw a second closure at the top of 2022 after just over a year of operation under the new management.

But now, The Staircase is making a comeback once again under another new management team: HubUp Event Management, comprised of Hub of the Hammer’s Matthew Surina alongside Marc Nascimento of Super 1-Up Games.

Additionally, Fable and Folly Podcast Network will taking over the theatre space, which will still be available to rent for live shows of all sorts.

On top of that, the city’s beloved RELAY Coffee Roasters will be taking over the café space as their brand new location to serve up their locally-roasted coffee, espresso, tea, baked goods, and beyond.

Reopening dates for The Staircase are still to be announced, but locals can follow along on social media for all of the updates!
