Hamilton’s West Harbour is getting a stunning public art plaza

Hamilton’s West Harbour is about to become even more beautiful.
As part of a massive redevelopment project planned for Hamilton’s waterfront between Piers 5 and 7, the City of Hamilton and the Hamilton Waterfront Trust have commissioned a large-scale public art project that will become a permanent fixture of the forthcoming West Harbour-James Street Plaza.
Conceptualized and created by Cree/Métis visual artist and designer (and owner of DeMontigny Boutique on James North) Angela DeMontigny, All Our Relations was selected out of a large submission pool by a volunteer jury of Hamilton residents, artists, and project stakeholders.
The massive multi-unit art piece, developed by DeMontigny alongside project partners Cobalt Connects, Paull Rodrigue, LaFontaine IronWorks, EXP, and Toque Innovations, is set to be installed at the waterfront in Spring of 2021.
The permanent installation will consist of five free-standing works constructed of steel and glass that each stand at 40’ in height. DeMontigny’s designs will be rendered in over 10,000 handmade glass beads by Hamilton craftsperson Paull Rodrigue.
“As an Indigenous designer and artist, I always acknowledge the importance of land, the natural world, the universe (sky world) and the spirit world,” says DeMontigny in her artist statement.
“I wanted to provide a visual reminder – also in keeping with the Haudenosaunee Thanksgiving address – to those who will live on the waterfront and those who visit, of the beauty that surrounds us every day and recognition of the Indigenous people whose land this was originally.”
