Here’s how you can view the 2024 Solar Eclipse in Hamilton

Hamilton gets to experience a once-in-a-lifetime total solar eclipse next week, and is one of few Ontario cities in the path of totality, where the sun will appear to be briefly, completely covered by the moon.

With multiple libraries, community centres, and civic museums distributing hundreds of thousands of free solar-safe eclipse glasses over the past few weeks, it’s clear Hamilton residents are excited to experience the event on Monday, April 8th.

The partial eclipse begins at 2:03 pm and the total solar eclipse is expected for 3:18 pm, lasting roughly 90 seconds. The eclipse ends at 4:31 pm.

Multiple locations in Hamilton have been designated as eclipse viewing sites that will surely draw crowds including conservation areas, Bayfront Park, Pier 4 Park, Confederation Beach Park, and a sold-out viewing event at Tim Hortons Field.

Of course, many locals will also be comfortably viewing from outside their own homes, and the city is reminding all residents to experience the eclipse safely.

Viewing the solar eclipse without proper eye protection poses significant safety risks and can cause temporary or permanent eye damage. Ensure that your eclipse viewing glasses meet the international standard ISO 12312-2. Normal sunglasses do not meet these standards.

This marks the first total solar eclipse visible in Canada’s provinces since February 26th, 1979, and it will be the only total solar eclipse visible in Canada, the United States, and Mexico in the 21st century.
