How to vote in the 2019 federal election in Hamilton

After weeks of candidates drumming up support in every corner of the city, election day has finally arrived. If you haven’t already cast an early vote, then you may be wondering just where and how to vote in Hamilton.

All eligible voters should have received a voter information card in the mail a few weeks ago. The location for polling stations in your community is included on the information card. You will need to be registered and to bring valid ID with you to vote.

There are five ridings in Hamilton on election day.

Hamilton Centre has been an NDP stronghold since 2004. With the NDP candidate changing this year, the Liberals have been pushing to take over the riding. The riding contains the downtown core, waterfront and much of the industrial area. It is a fiercely contested riding that has significant poverty and social issues as well as rapid rejuvenation.

Hamilton East-Stoney Creek was a riding that was regularly visited by federal candidates all campaign. It has been held by the Liberals since 2015 and proves to be a battle for the party to keep it. The riding covers a long band covering north of the Niagara Escarpment and east of Kenilworth Avenue North.

Hamilton West-Ancaster-Dundas candidates will be challenging to replace Justin Trudeau’s Minister of Seniors, Filomena Tassi. The Liberals have held the riding since it was first contested in 2015. The riding encapsulates a part of Ontario that used to be covered by Ancaster-Dundas-Flamborough-Westdale, Hamilton Centre and Hamilton Mountain.

Hamilton Mountain is one of the ridings with the closest races of recent elections with the NDP only edging out the Liberals by 2% of the vote in 2015. A lot of the close calls in elections could be a result of the swath of diversity in voters with low income housing and million dollar estates making up the riding.

Flamborough-Glanbrook has been blue since it was created with the Conservatives holding onto the riding for 7 years. The riding primarily covers rural parts of Hamilton but also includes some fast growing communities.

The polls are open today, October 21st at 9:30 am and close at 9:30 pm. Make sure to get out and vote, Hamilton!
