Hamilton Tiger-Cats set franchise record with 13th win

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats set a franchise record after their Saturday win over the Ottawa Redblacks, winning 13 games for the first time in franchise history.

In the Ticats’ 70 year history, they have won 8 Grey Cups and appeared in 12 other championship games. However, it was not until this year that they won 13 games in a season. More impressively, they’ve done so in a year where heavy adversity made many people write them off.

When Offensive Coordinator and 2018 Head Coach June Jones decided to step away in September, many believed that the offence wouldn’t have to punch that he and Masoli brought to the Ticats in 2018. To add to this stress, the Week 7 injury of quarterback and East Division Most Outstanding Player, Jerimiah Masoli, threatened to derail to entire season.

Surely, for the rest of the team and the new Offensive Coordinator Tommy Condell, there would be no shortage of excuses.

Unfortunately for all the other teams in the CFL, the team rallied around backup quarterback, Dane Evans, who didn’t feel like giving up.

Saturday’s 33-12 victory over the Redblacks came on the back of Dane Evans 452 passing yards, with one touchdown pass to Brandon Banks, who reached triple digit receptions for the first time in his career.

For the third straight week, the Ticats defence have allowed their opponents less than 14 points.

With an 8-2 record since Dane Evans became a starter, and both the offence and defence playing exceptional with two games left, the Ticats are on a roll that will be hard to stop. That being said, not one person in that locker room is satisfied with 13 wins.

Although 13 wins is a tremendous achievement,  15 wins is not unrealistic with two games left against Montreal and Toronto. The sole goal for every single player on that team is bringing home the 9th Grey Cup for the Tiger-Cats franchise.

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats play the Montreal Alouettes on Saturday October 26th at 1pm in a playoff preview.
