A ride on Hamilton public transit is going to cost a little bit more soon.
The Hamilton Street Railway (HSR) is set see a fare increase of adult transit fare by 5 cents beginning in September 2020 according to Jason VanderHeide, Hamilton’s manager of transit planning. The fare increase will coincide with the proposed enhancement of transit operations on the Hamilton Mountain, intended to instate more frequent bus service on the 44 Rymal and A-Line bus routes.
The @hsr wants to forge ahead on a 10-year transit strategy that would add more frequent bus service on the Mountain alongside a five-cent fare hike this year, @Mattatthespec reports #HamOnthttps://t.co/wXxNSGTtr7

As of now, a one-way trip on an HSR bus costs $3.25 in cash for adults, students, and seniors. This fare will increase to $3.30 in the Fall. The more economical means of riding the HSR are through adult paper tickets or PRESTO Card, both of which currently bring the cost down to $2.50 per ride.
This fare increase comes along with the news of Hamilton’s $7 million budget increase for local transit development, as Hamilton enters its 5th year of a 10-year strategy intended to increase ridership and improve a long list of HSR services.
Increasing the fare is intended to offset the significant expenses of these forthcoming plans and initiatives, for which service improvements alone are predicted to cost $4.23 million over two years.
