HSR workers and City of Hamilton reach tentative agreement

It’s promising news as the City of Hamilton has announced they have reached a tentative agreement with Hamilton Street Railway (HSR) workers and the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 107.

A release issued by the City on Thursday morning explains that the ATU Local 107 will be bringing this tentative agreement to their members for recommendation, and HSR buses will be returning to the roads “as soon as possible.”

As a result of the ATU Local 107’s strike action, Hamilton has been without HSR transit service since last Thursday, leaving local transit users to find alternative plans for the past week including ride sharing, carpooling, e-scooters, bike share, taxis and Ubers, walking, and working from home if possible.

While details of the tentative agreement haven’t been publicly shared, Mayor Andrea Horwath has expressed her delight that the City and HSR workers were able to reach a satisfying agreement.

“Strikes are difficult, and I thank the public for their patience and understanding while HSR was out of service. I know this disruption had very real impacts on people’s lives, and I look forward to the full restoration of service as soon as possible,” said Horwath.

“Our transit workers are very important to us, and we’re excited to welcome them back. Thank you to my City Council colleagues, our City bargaining team and ATU Local 107 leadership for their commitment to achieving a fair and speedy resolution to this important process.”
