John Rebecca Park has new renderings

Residents of the Beasley neighbourhood have been patiently awaiting their promised green space for nearly a decade. Today we are happy to share that not only the plans to build John Rebecca Park are well underway, but also construction of the much-needed park will begin in the spring.

The head of Hamilton’s department of City Planning, Jason Throne, took to Twitter to share the great news.

Jason Thorne also shared John Rebecca Park’s latest rendering. The green space’s design includes tree groves, an open grass area, a duel splash and skate pond as well as a pavilion. The rendering also left a blank space for where Club Seventy Seven currently sits.

Hamilton residents, especially those in the Beasley neighbourhood, have advocated for more green space and for the expropriation of Club Seventy Seven for years.

The club and its surrounding area have earned a reputation for violent crime. Some Hamiltonians feel as though the removal of Club Seventy Seven and the addition of John Rebecca Park will make for a greener, more inviting neighbourhood.

Back in 2017, Hamilton had its first taste of what it’d be like to have a park in the Beasley neighbourhood. Taking up only 20 parking spaces at the John & Rebecca street parking lot, Hamilton opened up its first pop-up park.

The park was used as an opportunity to collect feedback from Beasley residents, as well as to try different ideas.

We’re excited to see more public green space in the downtown core. The John Rebecca Park is sure to turn into an exciting community hub – we can’t wait for construction to begin!

Do you live in the Beasley neighbourhood? Where else would you like to see additional green space in the city? Let us know in the comments.
