John Rebecca Park has officially opened in downtown Hamilton

In the perfect example of turning lemons into lemonade, the shabby downtown Hamilton parking lot that used to sit near the corner of John Street and Rebecca Street has just been transformed into a beautiful and spacious park.

The new development, aptly named John Rebecca Park, officially opened this week for the public to enjoy after being under construction since June 2019.

The park’s construction was made possible by a generous $1 million donation to Hamilton City Council courtesy of the Patrick J. McNally Charitable Foundation; an organization that endeavours to play a role in the development of new parks and public outdoor spaces to be used and enjoyed by the community.

That certainly holds true for the new John Rebecca Park, a formerly unremarkable patch of the downtown core, just around the corner from Lulu’s Shawarma, that has been effectively and strikingly rejuvenated.

The new park hosts a number of features including an ice rink for the winter months, a shade structure with ample tables and seats, asphalt walkways that wind around eye-catching colourful mounds, as well as tree and perennial planting for some much-needed downtown greenery.

To formally commemorate John Rebecca Park’s opening, there will be a free community event this Saturday November 30th from 11 am to 3 pm featuring a ribbon cutting ceremony, a hot chocolate bar, a cotton candy station, as well as meet-and-greats with local firemen and police officers.

Go check out this beautiful new addition to Hamilton’s downtown!
