It’s official: Canada is having a federal election on September 20th.
At just 36 days in total – or just over 5 weeks – this speedy turnaround is the shortest that’s legally possible for a federal election.
This marks a re-election bid for current Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and stands to be an especially significant election as Canada continues to make its way out of the tumultuous COVID-19 pandemic.

The next five weeks will be a crucial campaign time for each party, with much of the campaigning focused on how they would intend to carry Canada through the pandemic’s continued impacts on the country, as well as the urgent climate crisis.
“Canadians need to choose how we finish the fight against COVID-19 and how we build back better,” said Trudeau at a press conference over the weekend.
Parties have a fast-and-furious few weeks of campaigning ahead of them, with Canadians officially heading to the polls to cast their votes on September 20th, 2021.
