Justin Trudeau makes national prescription drug policy announcement in Hamilton

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced plans for a national pharmacare program at a campaign rally in Hamilton on Monday. In addition to promising to implement a national prescription drug plan, Trudeau also pledged to ensure all Canadians have access to mental health services and a family doctor.

The announcement comes amidst a week of controversies for Trudeau and the Liberals, with the Prime Minister looking to move forward from a number of inappropriate images that have led some Canadians to express discomfort, alienation, and doubt in his governance. Over the last few days, Trudeau has also pledged to ban military-style assault weapons, eliminate taxes on incomes up to $15 000, and cut Canadians’ cell phone bills by 25%.

The move is in line with the Liberal government’s broader attempts to reduce the costs of healthcare for Canadians as well as recent announcements by the NDP.

Aside from implementing universal pharmacare, the Liberals also pledged to improve access to mental health services, homecare, and palliative care for all Canadians. The Liberals have not yet released a full cost for their programs, but Trudeau’s comments today mentioned a $6-billion down payment.

Aside from the policy announcements, Trudeau also made a number of stops at some local Hamilton businesses where he was greeted by crowds of excited supporters as well as a few protestors.
