Kitchen fire at Charred Rotisserie damages apartments on James North

A large kitchen fire at a Hamilton restaurant on Thursday afternoon has closed the restaurant temporarily and displaced tenants living in the apartments above.

Charred Rotisserie, located at 244 James Street North, is temporarily closed until further notice after a fire started in their kitchen and climbed its way up the 3-storey building through the kitchen ductwork, causing damage to two levels of apartments above the restaurant.

Hamilton Fire responded to the call around noon on Thursday, March 7th, and Fire Chief David R. Cunliffe soon provided the public with an update.

“Firefighters entering the restaurant reported heavy smoke and flame in the kitchen,” wrote Chief Cunliffe in a statement.

“As firefighting operations were happening on the main level, additional crews were conducting searches on the second and third floors. During these operations it was determined that the fire had extended to the second and third floor.”

Thankfully, all occupants had self-evacuated during the blaze and there were no injuries reported.

“Given the amount of damage that the building has sustained, the occupants will not be returning for the short term. The building owner has advised that all tenants have arranged for alternative accommodation,” says Cunliffe.

An estimated dollar loss has not yet been determined, nor has a reopening date for Charred.
