Local GO Stations may soon charge for parking

If you’re someone who drives to the GO Station as part of your daily commute, it might end up costing you more than just your gas soon.

Metrolinx, the transit agency that oversees GO Transit operations, is considering the idea of converting tens of thousands of parking spots into paid spots at GO Stations around Hamilton and elsewhere.

This information comes from internal reports obtained by The Globe and Mail, which state that the conversion could be starting as soon as a few months from now.

If that happens, up to 50 per cent of available parking spaces at your nearest GO Transit Station could potentially become reserved spots with a price tag attached over the next few years. This would affect GO Stations in the area with parking such as Aldershot, Appleby, and Burlington Stations.

For the luxury of a guaranteed parking space, reserved spots currently available at nearby GO Stations cost $98 per month to secure.

“We are studying solutions as we know many GO customers have a challenge finding parking. We also want to keep their transit costs affordable both for the customer and taxpayer,” said Anne Marie Aikins, a spokesperson for Metrolinx.

Aikins also expresses that the percentage of affected parking spaces has yet to be formally determined.
