Locals can help plan the new Fisherman’s Pier design at Hamilton Harbour

Fisherman’s Pier, located at the entrance to the Hamilton Harbour at the shipping canal, will soon be undergoing a reformation. The Hamilton-Oshawa Port Authority (HOPA) wants help from Hamilton and Burlington residents to help them plan their development plan.

Fisherman’s Pier is located right on the border of Burlington and Hamilton. The site features landmarks such as the Lift Bridge, Historical Lighthouse, Skyway Bridge, Breakwater piers, and the Canadian Center for Inland Waters.

The area used to be a buzzing center for commercial activity, and a popular attraction for those travelling through Hamilton and Burlington.

With the twinning of the QEW in 1985, many of the retail structures were removed and the area has lost a lot of it’s original charm.

HOPA hopes to return this area to its former beauty with improvements to several areas. The project is focused around four main areas: the Breakwater Piers, the Historical Lighthouse, Eastport Park, and an area designated for Future Parkland.

If you are unfamiliar with this area, worry not; HOPA’s website offers a virtual tour of the site, giving you insight on what exists now and where the improvements will be.

The Fisherman’s pier development votes will be facilitated in a similar fashion to the survey offered to Hamiltonians in regards to the Sam Lawrence Park changes.

Through the survey, Hamilton and Burlington residents can vote on what they would like to see for each of these areas. Many of their plans are based on ideas that exist around the world, such as potentially developing the Eastport Park into an “Urban Beach” similar to the Village au Pied-du-Courant in Montreal.

These plans are quite preliminary, and surely the development will take a while to come to fruition, but engagement at this early phase will heavily influence the direction of plans moving forward.

Hamiltonians who wish to contribute their input can access the survey here.
