Tobogganing is illegal in some areas of Hamilton

At the first sign of snowfall, many Hamiltonians are quick to grab their sleds and look for the nearest, biggest hill to go for an icy ride. However, in many areas of Hamilton, the ability to do so is not always the case.

The city actually banned people from tobogganing on any hill they want in their neighbourhood. After years of painful sledding prohibition in Hamilton, the city finally approved four designated hills where tobogganing is permitted in 2017.

The original ban was put in place after a local lawyer was injured while tobogganing and successfully sued the city for $900,000. Sledding enthusiasts looking for family fun in the wintery months were outraged by the ban, and fought to have the well-loved winter activity allowed back in Hamilton.

Luckily, not all areas of Hamilton have a tobogganing ban placed on them. The permitted tobogganing hills in the city usually open on the last day of school before the December break for the holidays. Designated hills include:

  • Chedoke Golf Course – Martin Course (Unfortunately, this hill is closed for the 2019-2020 season.)
  • Garth and Stonechurch Reservoir
  • King’s Forest Golf Course
  • Waterdown Memorial Park

The City of Hamilton has a list of safety tips listed on their website. It is strongly recommended for riders to wear hockey helmets or winter multi-sport helmets.

It is also recommended to not toboggan at night or dusk, and to consider the weather conditions before riding down the slopes.
