New public art project honours Hamilton’s healthcare heroes

After a similar initiative in 2019 was successful, the City of Hamilton is commissioning a new public art series to be installed on traffic signal boxes all over the city; and what makes the project even more special is that it is designed to honour the city’s incredible healthcare workers.

The city has narrowed down its 92 original submissions to a shortlist of 20 finalists, each created by a local visual artist and inspired by the tireless, ongoing efforts of Hamilton’s healthcare professionals amid the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic.

The shortlist was created based on a number of criteria, including artistic excellence, technical feasibility, and the potential ability to deter graffiti or vandalization.

Hamilton residents are now invited to have their say in the final decisions by selecting their top 3 favourites out of the 20 shortlisted by taking a public survey through the city website. Locals can view the 20 finalists and vote on their favourites up until September 7th, 2020.

Upon final selection, the winning works of art will be installed temporarily on typically unassuming, utilitarian traffic signal boxes positioned near Hamilton’s hospitals, bringing vibrant public art to the city that also sends a powerful message of thanks to those on the immediate frontlines of the pandemic.
