Nominations are now open for the 2021 City of Hamilton Arts Awards

The City of Hamilton Arts Awards, which have annually honoured some of the city’s most accomplished figures in the arts & culture scene since 1976, have just opened nominations for the 2021 awards; and this year, the format is completely different.

In the past, the Hamilton Arts Awards have been presented in categories based on discipline, with local established artists recognized by jury in artistic fields such as music, theatre, fine craft, dance, writing, arts education, and more.

Additionally, established nominees were required to recognize an emerging artist in their same discipline, who would also receive recognition and prize money if their established attaché was chosen to win their category.

However, a brand new structure has done away with all of that. Not only are the awards categories more generalized this coming year, but emerging artists are also now eligible to be nominated and recognized based on their own merits.

This year, local artists can be nominated for one of three awards, which will then be assessed by jury: a Lifetime Achievement Award, Creator Award, or Arts Champion Award.

The Lifetime Achievement Award will recognize the career-long achievements of a local artist who has made significant contributions in their discipline in Hamilton. This award comes with a $2,500 cash prize and a bronze medal designed by artist Dora de Pedery-Hunt.

The Creator Awards are in recognition of Hamilton artists or arts collective at any stage of their careers working in any creative discipline. A minimum of 8 Creator Awards will be given to honour artistic excellence and innovation. These awards are accompanied by $2,500 as well as a bronze medal.

Finally, the Arts Champion Award will be given to a maximum of 4 individuals who are being recognized for their exceptional support of the arts in Hamilton, whether as volunteers, advocates, or board members of arts organizations. This is a non-monetary award accompanied by a gift of recognition.

Nominations are open until January 22nd, so check out the Hamilton Arts Award website now and nominate your favourite local artist!
