Ontario has banned gatherings of more than 5 people amid COVID-19

The Ontario government has announced that it is putting even tighter restrictions on gatherings amidst the COVID-19 outbreak, officially issuing an emergency order that bans gatherings of more than five people for the foreseeable future.

Premier Doug Ford issued the emergency order this past Saturday night, officially and immediately prohibiting organized public events and social gatherings featuring more than five people. This replaces a former order prohibiting gatherings of more than 50 people.

There are, however, a few notable exceptions. Naturally, households with more than five residents are exempt from the order, as well as businesses deemed essential and child care facilities still working in support of Ontario’s frontline health care workers – as long as those care centres don’t exceed a maximum of 50 people.

Funerals will also be permitted to proceed, albeit with a limit of no more than 10 attendees at one time.

The emergency order was issued in the interest of urging the public to stay home and away from other people whenever possible – save for essential trips – to help slow the spread of the highly contagious COVID-19 virus.

“I strongly encourage everyone to do the responsible thing and stay home unless absolutely necessary,” said Premier Doug Ford. “I can assure everyone that we will do everything in our power to stop this virus in its tracks.”

Individuals who are found violating the emergency order are subject to be fined a $750 penalty.
