VIDEO: Mayor Fred Eisenberger shares message about COVID-19 with Hamilton

Hamilton’s Mayor Fred Eisenberger recently posted a video to YouTube addressing the public and sharing an important message during the escalating COVID-19 outbreak.

In the video, Mayor Eisenberger first takes the time to express gratitude for the city’s essential workers putting themselves at risk front-and-centre daily during this unprecedented health crisis.

“I’ve never been prouder to be a Hamiltonian,” says Eisenberger. “To out front line health care workers, first responders, supply chain and other imperative service workers: you are superheroes. Thank you for everything you’re doing to keep our community safe.”

He goes on to urge Hamilton residents to take proper precautionary measures during this outbreak, including staying home unless absolutely necessary, not gathering in groups, maintaining diligent hygiene and sanitation, and keeping at least two metres of distance between others if in public for essential needs.

Eisenberger also addresses what is one of the most frequently-asked questions amongst Hamiltonians during this pandemic: why isn’t the city declaring a state of emergency?

“Last Friday, council was able to meet and provide delegated authority to staff in order to effectively manage this emergency situation, and gave them all the powers they require to manage this issue,” explains Eisenberger.

“I want everyone to know there is no strategic or funding advantage to declaring a state of emergency. Public health and city staff have the authority they need to make the functional decisions required.”

As of 12 pm on Sunday March 29th, Hamilton has seen 70 confirmed cases of the COVID-19 virus. Locals can stay up to date by checking the City of Hamilton website.
