Ontario is now giving out COVID-19 rapid tests through grocery stores

Let’s try this again, shall we? After a move to distribute COVID-19 rapid tests through LCBO locations fell fantastically short, the Ontario government has begun to distribute rapid tests through over 2,300 grocery stores province-wide.

The Ontario government announced Wednesday that COVID-19 rapid testing kits – which have been difficult for individuals to secure as of late – will now be distributed to Ontario grocery stores at a rate of 5 million weekly, to be handed out for free to shoppers for the next 8 weeks.

The free testing kits – each one containing five tests – will be limited to one kit per family visit, and the program is now in effect at select locations of participating stores like Costco, Shoppers Drug Mart, Longo’s, Loblaws, Sobeys, Rexall, Food Basics, Metro, and Real Canadian Superstore.

The COVID-19 rapid tests are a crucial tool in mitigating the spread of COVID-19, with individuals able to conduct a simple test at home if they suspect they’re sick.

This is especially valuable in a time when the province has limited access to PCR testing to high-risk individuals only, making it extremely difficult to track COVID-19’s community prevalence.

Previously, the Ontario government had attempted to distribute COVID-19 rapid tests to LCBO locations for free pickup, prompting long lineups for what ended up being an extremely limited supply of testing kits.
