Ontario’s provincial government has admitted their mistake, and will be retracting their controversial new licence plate design.
When the province announced that Ontario’s licence plates would be a new white-on-blue design, the plan was immediately met with criticism over the illegibility of the plates, with the white text practically disappearing against its muted blue background at even a short distance.

Motorists and police officers have also pointed out that reading the plates in darker conditions at nighttime is virtually impossible.
At first, Ontario’s Government and Consumer Minister Lisa Thompson denied any issue with the new plates, but later admitted to the clear visual problems with the design.
The revised plates will revert to a white background, while still integrating a slightly new visual design. The new plates will come at no cost to taxpayers.
As of now, around 71,000 of the defective new plates have already been distributed to Ontario drivers, who will be issued instructions soon on how to claim their replacement plate. The defective plates will still continued to be issued until the new design is ready to replace it.
