Pearl Jam postpones tour to Hamilton over coronavirus concerns

One of Hamilton’s most hotly-anticipated concert events for 2020 has heartbreakingly been postponed until further notice in the wake of continued COVID-19 concerns.

Pearl Jam, the famous American rock band formed in the ‘90s, had announced a 2020 North American Tour just a few months ago, prompted by the release of their new album Gigaton; the band’s first studio release in years, due to be dropped on March 27th.

However, with continued global concerns surrounding the new and highly-contagious coronavirus disease, the band has made the difficult decision to cancel the current tour line-up and reschedule at a later date; including a scheduled stop in Hamilton at FirstOntario Centre on March 24th.

“We are being told that being part of large gatherings is high on the list of things to avoid as this global health crisis is now beginning to affect all of our lives,” said the band in a statement.

“Unfortunately, communing in large groups is a huge part of what we do as a band and the tour we’ve been busy planning for months is now in jeopardy… We have and will always keep the safety and well-being of our supporters as top priority.”

While music fans may be more-than disappointed about the news, the cancellation does come from a reasonable intent. Even in less-affected cities and areas, the potential for any virus to spread in large groups of thousands shouldn’t be ignored; especially with major concert events, where patrons may be travelling from other parts of the world to attend.

Any plans or announcements for a rescheduling of Pearl Jam’s 2020 North American Tour are still to come. No word yet, either, on how other large Hamilton events scheduled this year might be similarly affected.
