In line with the Ontario government’s plans, Hamilton will see mandated capacity limits and proof of vaccination policies lifted this week in applicable settings.
Through the COVID-19 pandemic, businesses deemed to be higher risk settings such as restaurants, bars, gyms, sports venues, and theatres have seen protective measures in place including reduced capacity and – as of this past fall – the introduction of a proof of vaccination policy that requires patrons in these settings to be vaccinated against COVID-19 with at least two doses.
Now, citing positive healthcare trends, the Ontario government is lifting these policies as of Tuesday, March 1st, meaning that those public settings across the province will no longer be mandated to limit their capacity or ask for proof of vaccination.
That said, some establishments may still opt to maintain these measures on an individual basis as an added layer of protection while the impacts of the pandemic – and the looming potential of future waves and new variants – continue in the province.

As of now, mask mandates remain in place province-wide, with the potential to be relaxed or removed later on depending on public health trends.
Despite the relaxing of these protections, it’s important to highlight that the pandemic continues to be a global public health threat, and that the need to reinstate protective measures in the near future is still possible.
“To manage COVID-19 over the long-term, public health units can deploy local and regional responses based on local context and conditions,” reads a release from the province.
