Restaurant review | Aout’N About brings nightlife to Augusta Street

Hamilton is host to a variety of nightlife hotspots, each with their own charm. As my friends and I grew older and tired of the hectic Hess club scene, we needed a quaint and laid-back, yet happening spot to gather for drinks on the weekends.

Augusta Street offers these qualities in abundance with five great pubs, almost all of which are located side-by-side. It’s rare in Hamilton to find a row of historic houses all converted and grandfathered into pubs like this strip here. It’s like a house party at every door!

The Pheasant Plucker, Augusta House, Aout’N About, The Ship, and The Winking Judge are all within spitting distance of each other. A few steps beyond these, closer to John St, is The Cat ‘N’ Fiddle and in the other direction, closer to James St N, is another group of eateries: radius®, Odds Bar, Mezcal, and Uno Mas. Given that they are all walking distance, you can forget about Ubering or freezing to the ‘next spot’ to see what the vibe is like. It didn’t take long for Augusta Street to become our new go-to hangout spot.

Whether you’re looking for a quick place to have a delicious burger at lunch, somewhere with a great ambiance to bring a casual date, or a bar with live music to meet up with your friends on the weekend and dance the night away — Augusta has it all!

One pub in particular, Aout’N About, is not only the tallest pub on the street but offers all these qualities and more as the quintessential culmination of the Augusta spirit: it has your regulars, your live music, your first-time visitors, your first-daters, your juicy burgers and fries, your friendly local bartender, and your game always on the TV. Everything is discussed over a pint here, from life to work to sports to music.

On the weekend is when this spot really heats up! Live music is upstairs after 11pm on Friday & Saturdays and before you know it, you’ve been dancing for three hours until it’s last call! Great local cover bands frequent this spot such as Tomi Swick, The Strummers Union, Driven and Brothers Du Monde (previously at the beloved and now-closed Gallaghers).

Aout’N About also has a great local DJ, Zach “Roger Thatt” Rogers (IG: @iamrogerthat), who spins a unique beat every Thursday night that you can’t sit still to!

Nightlife is alive and well on Augusta Street with no signs of slowing down. Augusta is perfect for university & college students who need a change of scenery from nightclubs, recent grads that have outgrown the aforementioned, and those late 20s-30+ who, well, just want to go out somewhere easygoing for a pint, a rock show and to a meet a new person or two!

I know that Thirsty Thursdays at Aout’N About is calling my name — who can say no to $4.25 bar rails, $3.75 shots, $6.00 draught beers, and a chill atmosphere for celebrating Friday Junior?!

See you at Aout’N About, located at 21 August Street, open from noon ‘til 2am daily!
