Prepare those thumbs, Hamilton coffee lovers: Tim Hortons’ iconic Roll Up the Rim contest is making its return.
There’s a catch, though. In an effort to make the nationwide contest more eco-friendly and sustainable this time around, Roll Up the Rim will be seeing some considerable changes in 2020.
Beginning March 11th and running through to April 7th across Canada, this year’s Roll Up the Rim contest includes a considerable digital component, with Tim Hortons patrons able to play online through the Tim Hortons app or through rolluptherimtowin.com.
Tim Hortons announced a new set of rules for its annual Roll Up the Rim contest, and it's going to involve a lot less rolling, and probably a lot less winning.

On top of that, the massive Canadian coffee chain is significantly reducing the use of paper cups as part of the contest, only offering them to customers for the first two weeks before switching exclusively to digital play for the remainder of this year’s Roll Up the Rim timeframe.
Tim Hortons is also encouraging their patrons to make use of reusable mugs and coffee cups, even going so far as to give away 1.8 million free reusable cups on March 10th in preparation for this year’s Roll Up event.
In order to participate digitally, Tim Hortons customers will be required to provide an email address as well as register for a Tim Rewards Card.
Though the new digital-forward Roll Up model may seem a little overcomplicated, it also represents an active response to the continual criticism against Tim Hortons from environmental activists and eco-conscious Canadians, who cite the coffee chain as a major generator of waste that only increases at Roll Up time.
